How can legumes help farmers manage weeds more sustainably while supporting biodiversity and soil health? This is the central question of the upcoming GOOD x VALERECO Joint Webinar – Part I: Weed Management in Legumes. Bringing together researchers and practitioners from across Europe, the session will explore agroecological approaches to weed control, with case studies from Greece, Portugal, and Serbia, as well as insights into the barriers and drivers shaping legume adoption.
Date: Tuesday, 23 September 2025
Time: 15:00 CET
Format: Online via Zoom

Meet the Speakers
University of Coimbra (UC)
Presenter: Irene Katsaros
Irene Katsaros will present findings from the white paper Overcoming Barriers to Valorizing Legume Ecosystem Services, which identifies challenges to wider legume adoption and strategies to unlock their potential. Her work highlights the role of legumes in soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience—elements central to agroecological weed management.
Burgundy School of Business (BSB)
Presenter: Prof. Lara Agnoli
Prof. Lara Agnoli will share insights from stakeholder interviews in the Serbian soybean and Portuguese cowpea living labs of the GOOD project. Her presentation will compare perceptions of Agroecological Weed Management (AWM) among industry professionals, policymakers, and researchers, and explore the factors influencing adoption.
Agricultural University of Athens (AUA)
Presenter: Giannis Gazoulis
Giannis Gazoulis will present results from the first experimental year in VALERECO living lab fields. His work focuses on the effects of legume-based crop rotation schemes and non-chemical weed control on key crop and weed parameters.
Living Seeds Sementes Vivas (LSSV)
Presenter: Els Wijnstra
Els Wijnstra will discuss Agroecological Weed Management (AWM) strategies tested in cowpea cultivation across three experimental sites in Portugal. Her presentation will include preliminary results on weed suppression using cover crops, mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, and different cover crop termination methods.
Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (IFVCNS)
Presenter: Prof. Jegor Miladinović
Prof. Jegor Miladinović will present field trial results from Novi Sad, focusing on the impact of green manure, intercropping, and mechanical weed control on soybean production. The presentation will also include soil analyses and assessments of weed and pest infestations under different treatments.
Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje” (MRIZP)
Presenter: Dr. Milan Brankov
Dr. Milan Brankov will explore weed control strategies in soybean under both organic and conventional production systems, sharing comparative results from recent research at the Maize Research Institute.
Join the Discussion
This first webinar will highlight both practical results from living lab experiments and broader socio-economic perspectives on legumes in sustainable farming systems. Following the presentations, participants will have the opportunity to take part in an interactive Q&A session, engaging directly with the speakers and deepening the discussion on agroecological weed management.
