From 12–13 June 2025, the city of Pisa became a hub for collaboration, exchange, and forward-looking thinking as the VALERECO project held its 1st Annual Meeting, hosted by Università di Pisa (UNIPI) and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA).

With participants joining from across Europe, the meeting brought together the full consortium — under the coordination of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) — for two days of rich dialogue, field-based learning, and planning for the path ahead.

Walking the Fields, Sharing the Vision

A defining moment of the meeting was the field visit to the UNIPI–SSSA trials, where researchers and partners had the chance to see firsthand the ongoing work on legumes and sustainable cropping systems. Beyond data and presentations, it was an opportunity to step into the living labs of VALERECO, connect research to practice, and reflect on the multiple ecosystem services legumes provide — from soil health to biodiversity.

Engaging, Reflecting, and Planning Ahead

Across both days, the agenda featured presentations from all partners of the project as well as from sister initiatives, offering space to reflect on progress and identify synergies. Workshops and group discussions encouraged open exchange and helped align efforts across regions and disciplines. A key highlight was also the joint meeting of all Living Lab Managers, reinforcing the central role of the living lab approach within the project.

A Walk Through History

Beyond the formal sessions, participants also enjoyed a guided walking tour of Pisa’s historic centre, taking in iconic landmarks and sharing informal moments that strengthened the human side of collaboration. These in-between moments, often just as valuable, created space for deeper connections and new ideas.

A Thank You to All

We extend our warm thanks to all participants for their contributions, ideas, and presence — and especially to our hosts at SSSA and UNIPI for their impeccable organisation and warm welcome.

Having returned to our respective countries and institutions, we carry with us renewed clarity, shared purpose, and valuable connections that will continue to drive VALERECO forward.
